Injured police officers airlifted to Nairobi for special treatment

Eleven police officers were Tuesday airlifted to Nairobi for specialised treatment after sustaining serious injuries after anti-IEBC protests turned chaotic in parts of Nyanza.

According to Kisumu County Commissioner John Elungata, the officers are said to have sustained injuries in Kisumu and Siaya counties where they were allegedly roughed up by some of the demonstrators.

The protests were held to push for the resignation of IEBC commissioners over apparent lack of credibility to hold a free and fair election in 2017.

Elungata said the officers will be treated and resume their duties of enforcing the law as soon as they fully recover.

Three protesters were reportedly shot dead during the confrontations.

Police spokesman Charles Owino has, however, defended police action saying the officers are allowed by law to defend themselves whenever their lives are in danger.

He, however, said that action will be taken against any officer found guilty of contravening the law.

The protests in Kisumu and Siaya turned chaotic after police lobbed teargas to disperse the protesters.

Similar protests were held in Mombasa, Kakamega and Nairobi though there were no reports of any deaths.

CORD has promised to go on with their protests every Monday until IEBC commissioners vacate office.
