Insurance firm bans Toyota Probox

Local insurance firm, Kenya Orient, has flagged popular and infamous car model Toyota Probox from their cover options.

The insurer, we are told, is concerned by the high cost of insuring the car especially in areas like Embu, Meru and Kisumu where they seem to be most popular. The car is popular for ferrying miraa and is used as a matatu in many rural areas.

In a circular seen by Citizen Digital, the insurance company singled out the Toyota Probox because of what we are told by an insider is the high cost of insuring it. The car is accident prone due to “careless handling” and insuring it does not make business sense for the company.

The other issue, we are told, is Probox owners tend to pick private insurance covers then operate the vehicles as PSVs while others opt for Third-Party covers.

“Note that with immediate effect, we will not insure this vehicle model” read the circular.
