In a statement, the United States said it stood with the Kenyan government in the effort to end the scourge of terrorism.

"The attack once again reinforces the need for all countries and communities to unite in the effort to combat violent extremism," read the statement.

Elsewhere, Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Rob Nicholson has issued a statement saying Canada is 'appalled' by the terrorist attack that claimed many innocent lives.

"On behalf of all Canadians, I express my deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims and wish a swift recovery to the injured," said Nicholson.

“Canada stands by the people of Kenya in these difficult times and will continue to support international efforts to combat terrorism in all its forms," added the Foreign Affairs Minister.

The Executive Secretary of IGAD, Ambassador (Eng.) Mahboub Maalim condemned “in the strongest terms” the terror attack.

"As a region, we are saddened by this barbaric act of terrorism," said Amb Maalim. "We extend our deepest condolences to the Government and People of Kenya, particularly to the parents and families of the victims."

The Executive Secretary reiterated the commitment of the IGAD Secretariat to continue working with its Member States as they strive to bring stability to the region.

“IGAD will continue to work with Kenya and other countries in the region in the fight against terrorism,” he said, urging Kenyans not to be divided along religious lines.
