The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched a probe into the alleged fatal shootings of suspects by police officers on duty.

According to a statement sent to newsrooms on Tuesday, IPOA will investigate the killing of three suspected robbers in separated incidences in Huruma and Mathare on October 29, 2018, as well as the shooting of a man in Migori County by an Administration Police Officer attached to Kegonga Police Division.

Other incidences to be investigated also include the fatal shooting of six suspected robbers in Dandora and three others in Kerugoya on Sunday October 28, the shooting of three more suspects in Yatta on October 23 and two in Burma on October 22.

“On its own motion, and acting pursuant to its statutory mandate under Section 25(1) of the IPOA Act that requires the Authority to investigate deaths and serious injuries caused by Police action, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched independent investigations into the incidents with a view of unravelling the circumstances that led to the fatal shootings, and more particularly whether the police officers were justified in the use of their firearms,” reads the statement released by IPOA Head of Communications Dennis Oketch.

“Upon conclusion, if culpability is found, the Authority will ensure the responsible officers face the full force of the law through appropriate criminal and/or disciplinary recommendations to the Director of Public Prosecutions and other suitable Government Agencies.”
