Is cycling the answer to Nairobis crazy traffic? This group thinks so

The National and County governments are still grappling with how to de-congest the city.

However, a group of cyclists known as Critical Mass Nairobi have been sensitising Nairobi residents on the importance of keeping fit.

They recently even tried to lobby the government’s support in providing a dedicated cycling lane to ease traffic congestion.

De-congesting the city has been the topic in almost every Kenyans mind since mid-last year with the ever-growing traffic snarl-ups.

This prompted a directive by Nairobi County Governor Mike Sonko to initiate a ban on public transport, a move that was welcomed and criticised in equal measure.

The Governor then lifted the ban citing a need for partners and various other stakeholders to be involved in executing the same.

Car-Free Days

On January 28, Transport CS James Macharia announced that the city will be launching car-free days.

This was to supposedly test the county’s preparedness for the roll out of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system whose implementation is raising queries in different quarters.

According to the CS, the Nairobi CBD would be a no-go zone for vehicles on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

However, the move has since been suspended as it also awaits stakeholder interaction and hawker biometric data registration.
