Isaac Mwaura wants Kikuyu musicians arrested over hate speech

Nominated Senator Isaac Mwaura has called for the arrest of Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu as well as two Kikuyu musicians on account of incitement and spreading ethnic hate.

His sentiments come in the wake of the National Cohesion and Integration Commission’s (NCIC) probe into Ikamba, a vernacular Kikuyu song riddled with anti-Kamba rhetoric.

Speaking exclusively to Viusasa News, Mwaura claimed that the recent slew of ethnic-driven hate was started by Governor Ngilu.

“The NCIC should arrest the two Kikuyu singers. Ngilu should also be arrested because she is the one who began the hate-speech,” Mwaura said.

Mrs. Ngilu was accused of inciting an arson attack on a charcoal-ferrying lorry torched by Kitui locals during a crack-down on charcoal trade in the region.

Following the charcoal ban, two Kikuyu artistes released the controversial song that paint the Kamba as poor people who entirely depend on mangoes and handouts from Kikuyu traders.

The song has elicited mixed reactions with civilians and leaders demanding swift legal action against the two.

According to Mwaura, Kikuyus and Kambas have been living in harmony until feud over charcoal trade and sand harvesting in Kitui.

“I really want to condemn that song, it is wrong for anyone to create disharmony between the Kikuyu and the Kamba. Kikuyu’s and Kamba’s are brothers and it is unfair to create hate between them,” Mwaura added.
