Isiolo Boys High School closed, 28 students arrested

Isiolo Boys High School has been closed after a fight erupted among the students leading to 28 of them being arrested.

Trouble began on Sunday morning after students who were holding prayers at the school mosque were pelted with stones.

Following the incident, the students retaliated by burning down mattresses and damaging property in two dormitories before police were alerted.

Some students scampered out of the school premises in fear of their safety, while others took refuge within the school before they were all directed to go home.

Isiolo County Director of Education John Nzinga said no injuries were reported during the incident.

“We have not received any reports on injuries. For now the school has been closed for two weeks, but the board will decide on when to re-open,” said Mr. Nzinga.

“We are investigating whether there are personal conflicts among the students but for now we cannot conclude what the motive of the unrest was.”

Twenty-eight students were arrested as investigations into the incident continue, with the school board of management set to hold a meeting on Monday.  The school has a total of 309 students.
