In Summary

  • According to Loruko sub-location census supervisor Peter Lekalkuli, the attackers descended on the village shortly before 7.00pm on Tuesday evening killing two men and injuring 23-year-old enumerator, Valentine Lamasia on her right leg.

Two men are reported to have been shot dead while a female census enumerator escaped with gunshot wounds following a bandit attack in Loruko area, Isiolo County.

According to Loruko sub-location census supervisor Peter Lekalkuli, the attackers descended on the village shortly before 7.00pm on Tuesday evening killing two men and injuring 23-year-old enumerator, Valentine Lamasia on her right leg.

Lekalkuli further noted that the attack happened just after he had summoned Lamasia to submit the day’s statistics to him for forwarding to the national server.

He said that the enumeration exercise would continue despite the attack.

Isiolo North Member of Parliament Hassan Odha who visited the area claimed that the attackers’ motive was to sabotage the ongoing national population and housing census, since they attacked a house occupied by enumerators.

Odha indicated that there was need for more security personnel in the area in order to ensure that the census exercise is concluded without further hindrances.

He called on the county security team to move with speed and deploy additional police officers to areas known to be insecurity hot spots.

Odha further announced that security officers had so far managed to track the attackers’ footprints using sniffer dogs to Ngaremara area, expressing optimism that the bandits would be positively identified and brought to book.

Burat ward MCA Hassan Yarrow urged Loruko people not to flee the area for fear of further attacks, and instead stay put and ensure that they are enumerated in big numbers.

He noted that similar attacks are always carried out in the area during census, and called upon the locals to expose those who are against the exercise by making sure that everyone in the area is counted.

Other leaders present also called upon the county security team to ensure that more is done to ensure the census exercise proceeds in the affected area as planned.
