Its free secondary education from January

It is reprieve to parents starting January 2018, as the government has signaled it will be effecting the free day secondary school education it pledged during the 2017 election campaign period.

According to a new guideline from the Ministry of Education, learners in day schools will not pay any school fees, with parents required to only carter for school uniform and food for their children.

In the new guideline, the government has tremendously increased capitation fee for day school students from around Ksh.10,000 to Ksh.22,244 starting January 2018.

This, the government says, is a bid “to ensure a 100% transition for all learners from primary to secondary schools and remove the Ksh.9,374 burden from parents.”

The latest move also sees fees for boarding school reduced considerably, as students will get the same capitation fee as their day school counterpart are enjoying.

This means that students in county boarding schools will now be paying Ksh.40,535 to carter for boarding facility and food.

The ministry has further outlined that it will disburse the money in three installments of Ksh.11,122, Ksh.6,673, Ksh.4,448 in December 2017, April 2018 and August 2018 respectively.

Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang has since warned all secondary school heads against misusing funds and anybody found liable will face full wrath of the law.
