Jirongo accused of lying about Moi son in Ksh.50M land saga

Cyrus Jirongo was on Thursday arraigned in court to answer to charges of giving false information linking Jonathan Moi to a Ksh. 50million land fraud case.

The former presidential candidate, who was summoned to court last week, was charged with giving false information to a person employed in the public service contrary to the laws of Kenya.

The court heard that on March 27, 2015, at the DCI Headquarters in Nairobi, the ex-legislator informed a police officer that he had completed payment of Ksh. 7million to Mr. Moi.

The former Lugari MP is said to have given the information he knew to be false with intent to convince the officer that it was for purchase of Soy Developers Limited.

Court papers also indicate that the information uttered was with intent of causing the arrest of Mr. Moi as an accomplice in the alleged fraudulent purchase of the property.

Jirongo is also charged with obtaining execution of security by false pretences.

It is alleged that he instructed Postbank Credit Limited to accept a bank charge in respect of LR No. 209/11151 – IR 47029 registered in the name Soy Developers Limited by false pretences and with intent to defraud.

This was apparently to secure an overdraft facility of Ksh. 50million to cyber projects international as valuable security on September 25, 1992 in Nairobi.

In a third count, he is accused of making a false document namely a bank charge purported to have been signed by Sammy Boit Kogo in regard to the said LR No. 209/11151 – IR 47029.

Appearing before Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi, Jirongo pleaded not guilty to the said charges.

Through his lawyer, Danstan Omari, he pleaded with the court to release him on a lenient cash bail.

He submitted that the court should consider his financial ability today since he is no longer a politician.

The magistrate released him on a cash bail of Ksh. 200,000 with an alternative bond of Ksh. 500,000 with one surety.

The case will be mentioned on September 11 for pretrial directions.
