Lecturers storm VC office over Ksh.178M pay

Lecturers from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) stormed into the office of the vice chancellor accusing the management for withholding their March salary.

It is said that salaries for over 2000 workers amounting to Ksh. 178 million have not been paid.

However, VC Mabel Ibuga was not in her office leaving junior staff unable to deal with the irate lecturers.

The lecturers who have been on strike for the last 2 months, say that the government released their salaries but they suspect that the money may have found its way to a individual’s personal account.

They gave the management until Monday when they threatened to camp at the VC’s office until they receive their cheques.

Nickson Chege, Secretary of the Kenya Universities Staff Union (KUSU), maintained that the lecturers won’t go back to class before their demands are met. He also accused the management of intimidation and harassment.

According to KUSU National Treasurer James Makori, students are now idle because of the strike and are taking up vices such as drug abuse.

He warned that if the strike continues, the government may face an even bigger problem of rehabilitating the students.
