Political rivals Nanok, Munyes to work together

Turkana Governor Josphat Nanok and Petroleum CS John Munyes have agreed to bury the hatchet after political rivalry that saw the two battle for the gubernatorial seat last year.

The duo who have been in competition for over four years said it is time to put the needs of their people first.

“We look forward to working closely together. I will not operationalise critical legislation without consulting the governor,” Mr. Munyes said.

Top on their agenda has been debate on proper oil revenue share as per the Petroleum Bill, 2015.

Governor Nanok maintained his plea that the county government be allocated 20 per cent of revenue generated and the host community 10 per cent .

On his part however, Mr. Munyes distanced himself from factions opposing recent proposals by Majority Leader Aden Duale to have reduce allocation for the host community to 5 per cent.

“The government position is very clear on revenue allocation but we will continue our consultations with host communities and the relevant government sectors to ensure that everyone is satisfied,” the CS said.

He assured residents that legislation governing the petroleum sector would be in place before the country rolls out the early oil pilot scheme in May.

The two leaders added that an advisory committee will be created to act as a watchdog to ensure that the local community has its share of jobs and tenders before the Local Content Bill becomes law.
