Journalists beaten by anti-riot police officers in Kisumu

A section of journalists covering the NASA anti-IEBC demos in Kisumu on Monday, October 9 were harassed and beaten up by GSU officers.

Eyewitnesses say that a KTN journalist suffered serious bruises after the officers deployed to quell the protests demanded that he stops filming the demos.

The GSU officers moving with water cannons and lorries allegedly lobbed teargas canisters at everyone including those going for their daily routines. The police are alleged to have intentionally lobbed tear gas canisters at journalists during the process of driving the protesters out of town.

Business in Kisumu town was brought to a halt and shops closed as a result, with major streets including Jomo Kenyatta Avenue and Oginga Odinga Street remaining deserted.

Anti-riot officers, for the better part of Monday afternoon, engaged anti-IEBC protestors in running battles moments after local leaders led them in a peaceful march to the regional IEBC offices.
