Journalists take to the street to protest oppression, harassment

Hundreds of journalists from the Coastal region took to the streets in Mombasa County to oppose the mistreatment and unexplainable deaths of their fellow journalists in the country.

The journalists marched from Uhuru Gardens to the Coast Regional Coordinator’s office located at Uhuru na Kazi building where they presented their memorandum to the Regional Coordinator, Nelson Marwa.

This came amidst an increase in journalist oppression, with unexplained deaths and assault on journalists increasing in the recent past.

The journalists lamented that they are now left to go about their duties in an unsafe environment that triggers fear.

Mr Marwa assured the journalists that they would be kept safe, adding that action will be taken whenever cases of harassment are reported.

“You have a right to inform Kenyans if someone is sleeping on the job. The government will interrogate all your complaints and necessary action will be taken,” said Marwa.
