JSC reviews CJ interviews schedule as Makau Mutua get a date

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has review the interview schedule for Chief Justice position following a court order to review all applications submitted.

In the new schedule, seven applicants who had not been shortlisted in the Judiciary’s top post have been slotted in with the dates for Deputy Chief Justice which was set to begin next week being pushed to Monday, September 26, 2016 at 9am.

Interviews for Supreme Court Judge’s position will begin on Monday, October 10, 2016.

Paul Andrew Kongani, an applicant for the CJ position, will now appear before JSC on Monday September 9, while Justice (Rtd) Aaron Ringera will appear the following day.

Ambassador Daniel Wambura will appear before the commission on Wednesday, September 7 while David Waihiga will be the last interviewee for the week with his session beginning on Thursday at 9am.

Monday, September 12 will be Justice Professor Jackton Ojwang’s turn to appear before the commission while Lucy Wanja Julius and Prof Makau Mutua will be vetted on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively.

The adjustment has been done to comply with a court order which called for the reevaluation of the shortlisting process to allow all the applicants get a chance to be interviewed.

So far, Justices Almashir Visram, Amraphael Mbogholi and David Maraga have appeared before the commission as the search for the next Chief Justice continued.

The CJ seat was left vacant following the retirement of Willy Mutunga after five years of service, with Kalpana Rawal’s retirement leaving the DCJ seat vacant.

Embattled Judge Philip Tunoi, who was during his last days in office under probe over bribery allegation, also retired leaving an empty slot in the Supreme Court.
