Jubilee candidate win nullified

A Member of the County Assembly (MCA) candidate on a Jubilee Party ticket in Kwale County had his election certificate revoked by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Thursday (August 10) after it emerged that he and his competitor on an ODM ticket got a similar number of votes in the August 8 General Election.

Juma Maone of Jubilee Party and Omari Hamisi of ODM, both garnered 2,600 votes in Kinondo Ward, Kwale County.

A certificate was issued to Mr Maone, who was ahead of Mr Omari, despite results from one polling station in Msambweni not having been incorporated in the final tally at the time.

When poll results from Msambweni were collated, the final tally showed that Mr Omari and Mr Maone got similar count of votes – 2, 600, consequently leading to the revocation of the Jubilee candidate’s certificate.

According to Msambweni Constituency Returning Officer, a Mr. Yusuf, the IEBC will set another date, yet to be communicated, for a by-election.
