We have a right to request services from IEBC, DP Ruto tells opposition

Deputy President William Ruto has defended a request by the Jubilee Party for the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to conduct its primaries arguing that the Party has a constitutional right to request services from the electoral body

Ruto told off opposition leaders for threatening to move to court to stop IEBC from conducting the Jubilee Party primaries set for April.

“We are consulting IEBC with a view of seeking its services in conducting our primaries because it is our constitutional right to seek the agency’s services on matters of nominations,” said Mr Ruto.

Addressing Jubilee leaders from Nyamira County in his Karen office on Monday, the deputy president urged opposition leaders to concentrate on matters pertaining to their house instead of criticizing plans by Jubilee Party to seek services of IEBC in conducting its primaries.

Jubilee Party and IEBC have agreed to form a joint technical committee to explore means for the electoral commission to hold nominations on behalf of the party.

The party is keen to have an external body to conduct its primaries so as to assure impartiality in the exercise.
