Jubilee, KANU in heated campaigns ahead of Kericho by-elections

Senate Majority Leader Kithure Kindiki has appealed to Kericho residents to stand by Deputy President William Ruto during the forthcoming senatorial by-election.

The Tharaka Nithi Senator called on the electorates to vote for Aaron Cheruiyot in the by-election slated for March 7th, to assert the region’s stand in Jubilee.

“The people who have launched campaigns against Jubilee candidate Aaron Cheruiyot are out to pulverize the coalition. Even if they were part of us, they should know that by supporting a rival candidate they have abandoned the party,” he said.

Kindiki spoke during a campaign to drum up support for the 30-year-old businessman who is eyeing the seat that fell vacant following the appointment of Charles Keter as the Cabinet Secretary for Energy.

Cheruiyot, in his address, argued that time for the youth to take over leadership had come and that the older generation should give way.

On the other hand, KANU candidate Paul Sang dismissed Cheruiyot’s school of thought saying that politics is a game of numbers and some positions such as that of the senator require highly experienced politicians.

Sang enjoys the backing of Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto, KANU chair and Baringo Senator Gideon Moi and Nandi Hills MP Alfred Keter among other Jubilee ‘rebels’.

Despite supporting a rival candidate, Gideon Moi on Monday said that KANU is part of Jubilee owing to a post-election agreement signed in 2013.

The Jubilee team was split into three groups, holding 17 rallies across the county using helicopters with one group holding door-to-door campaigns.

Speaking in Kebeneti Trading Center in Soin/Sigowet Constituency, Energy CS Charles Keter warned the residents against gambling with leadership saying a vote for KANU is a vote into political wilderness.

Keter said Cheruiyot was in a better position to initiate development projects that will  better the lives of the residents.

In different rallies, political leaders supporting Sang’s bid called on the electorate to vote for the KANU candidate since “Jubilee had failed to meet its 2013 campaigns pledges.”

Governor Ruto said Sang will act as a wake-up call for Jubilee government to start serving Kenyans noting that no tangible development has been realised since it took over power in 2013.

Meanwhile, Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General Wilson Sossion has expressed his support for Sang ahead of the hotly contested by-election.

Addressing teachers at the Kericho Teachers College on Wednesday, Sossion said teachers in the county should back Sang in the by-election as a way of expressing their disgruntlement with the Jubilee administration over apparent mistreatment.
