Jubilee leaders dismiss Infotrack poll

A section of Kirinyaga leaders led by Kirinyaga Senator Daniel Karaba and Kirinyaga Central MP Gachoki Gitari have dismissed the latest Infotrack opinion poll showing that President Uhuru Kenyatta’s popularity has dipped as CORD leader Raila Odinga’s ratings climbed.

Speaking separately at Kiangwaci na Kangai, both leaders said the opinion poll is a scheme to tarnish the Jubilee Government.

This comes just a day after a survey report was released showing that Kenyans are fast losing faith in political leaders and parties.

The poll by Infotrak shows President Uhuru Kenyatta’s popularity has almost halved to 33 per cent from 59 per cent last year.

The poll, that was conducted last week amidst an uproar over corruption allegations in the Devolution Ministry headed by Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru, shows more Kenyans are getting disillusioned with the government’s performance on key indicators especially corruption.

According to the poll conducted between 6th and 9th of November 2015, 40.9 per cent of Kenyans feel that corruption is the most pressing issue while 13.3 per cent point to the high cost of living.

Among them, 50 per cent want corrupt officials immediately prosecuted with 29 per cent asking them to step aside.

In the report, 62 per cent of Kenyans think the country is heading in the wrong direction compared to 27 per cent who feel the country is on the right track with 11 per cent of Kenyans are not sure where the country is headed.

If polls were called today 21.7 per cent of Kenyans say they are undecided on who to vote in as president compared to a meager 8.7 per cent last year.

According to the survey, Jubilee Coalition remains the most popular with 37.5 per cent as Cord comes second at 33 per cent. However, 22 per cent of Kenyans do not associate with any party.

The survey further shows the popularity of Cord Leader Raila Odinga commanding an increase to 28.7 per cent up from 19.3 per cent last year.

According to the survey conducted in 25 counties in all the former provinces, the media tops the list of most trusted national institutions with 83 per cent having confidence in the sector.

This is comparing to the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission, which is the least trusted at 49 per cent.
