Jubilee leaders propose retirement package for Raila Odinga

Jubilee legislators from Tharaka Nithi County have dismissed plans by the National Super Alliance (NASA) to ‘swear in’ its leader Raila Odinga this month, saying the opposition leader should rather focus on engaging the government on his retirement package.

Led by Maara Member of Parliament Kareke Mbiuki, the leaders said Odinga should forget about the presidency and retire, claiming that his political career came to an end when he lost to President Uhuru Kenyatta in two consecutive elections.

Mr. Kareke dismissed the formation of an ‘Assumption of Office committee’ by the NASA secretariat, adding that the opposition is wasting its time since the presidential seat is already occupied by President Kenyatta.

Chuka Igamba Ng’ombe MP Patrick Munene noted that Mr. Odinga had done a lot for the country in terms of strengthening democracy, but it was time for him to take a rest.

The leaders were speaking at the burial ceremony of a prominent business man’s wife in Chuka town who lost his life at the Nithi bridge along the Chuka- Meru highway.

Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki gave an assurance that plans were underway to rebuild the bridge that has caused many deaths over the years.

The National Super Alliance (NASA) opposition coalition intends to ‘swear in’ Odinga at Uhuru Park grounds at the end of this month. The controversial inauguration is set to be held after a series of rallies and meetings in several counties.

On Sunday, January 7, Mr. Odinga and other NASA leaders will embark on a tour of western Kenya with trips to Busia and Kakamega where People’s Assembly gatherings will be held.
