NASA trying to postpone General Election, Jubilee leaders say

A section of Jubilee Leaders from West Pokot County have dismissed claims by the newly formed opposition coalition the National Super Alliance (NASA) that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is not ready to conduct a fair and credible election come August.

Speaking at Kapenguria on Sunday, West Pokot Governor Simon Kachapin and Pokot South Lawmaker David Pkosing assured the IEBC that NASA’s claims were far-fetched.

They noted that dismissing the commission’s preparedness in public would prevent the poll’s body from implementing its constitutional mandate.

“It’s wrong for opposition to blame IEBC and yet they participated fully in the placement of the new office bearers,” said Governor Kachapin.

On his part, Pkosing opined that the move by NASA is aimed at postponing the August polls, adding that the coalition is ill prepared for elections especially because it is yet to settle on a flag bearer.

“They went to court to bar the commission from procuring election materials; they also barred the commission from conducting an audit of the voters’ register. The opposition has a hidden agenda concerning the elections and they should come out and tell Kenyans,” said Pkosing.

Their claims come a week after opposition leaders claimed that the 2017 General Election could be bungled because of inadequate preparations by the electoral commission.

The leaders were meeting with Jubilee Party (JP) grass-root campaigners to strategize on how the party will clinch all the elective seats in the county in the coming general elections, in a region that is believed to be a KANU stronghold.
