Jubilee may use tyranny of numbers to extend Uhurus term- Kalonzo

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has claimed that Jubilee may change the Constitution to extend Presidential term limits if they win majority seats in the National Assembly.

Speaking in Nyamira on Sunday, Kalonzo called on Kenyans to unite behind CORD and deny Jubilee numbers in the 2017 elections as this would ensure democracy is upheld in the country.

“Do not give Jubilee seats in the 2017 elections because they may use tyranny of numbers to change the Constitution and extend President Uhuru Kenyatta’s stay in power,” he said, adding: “A leader should not be in power forever, and it is paramount that Jubilee is defeated in the 2017 elections for tribalism and poverty to be eradicated in Kenya.”

He, however, called on Kenyans to unite behind CORD to ensure democracy is upheld in the country.

“ODM, Wiper and Ford Kenya will not merge like Jubilee has done. We will remain integral parties in one coalition to give Kenyans more options to choose that they want.”

Kalonzo further expressed optimism that his co-principals Ford Kenya leader Moses Wetangula and ODM’s Raila Odinga would support his bid saying he is better placed to defeat Jubilee.

According to Chapter Nine of the Constitution, “the President shall hold office for a term of five years beginning from the date on which he is sworn in as President….and shall not hold office as president for more than two terms”.

For this to change, however, a referendum is needed.
