Jubilee, NASA challenged to address FPE shortcomings

The ruling Jubilee Party and the Opposition National Super Alliance (NASA) leaders have been challenged to address the problems facing free primary education in public schools before promising Kenyans free secondary education.

Elimu Yetu Coalition Director, Janet Muthoni, says the FPE programme that was launched in 2003 is still facing a myriad of challenges including lack of infrastructure in urban informal settlements and rural areas.

Speaking during a forum on Alternative Provision of Basic Education organized by Bridge International Academies here in Nairobi, Muthoni asked the government to support private schools in provision of free primary education before the implementation of free secondary education.

On his part, Bridge International Academies Director of Corporate Affairs, Antony Mugodo, called on private schools to comply with Ministry of Education requirements on employment of qualified teachers.
