Jubilee primaries were not free and fair Kembi Gitura

Murang’a Senator, Kembi Gitura, now says the ruling by the Political Parties Tribunal nullifying Governor Mwangi Wa Iria’s nomination as the Jubilee Party gubernatorial aspirant in Murang’a is proof that the exercise was not free and fair.

Kembi, who also doubles up as the Senate Deputy Speaker, lost the primaries to Kiharu Member of Parliament, Irungu Kang’ata.

The Tribunal ordered fresh nominations on grounds that the number of voters who voted exceeded those in the Jubilee Party register.

“I think that the people who allege to have been successfully nominated in the concluded Jubilee primaries should let the independent candidates campaign for themselves without victimization. We chose to be independent candidates because we thought that the nomination process was flawed,” said Kembi.

He termed it as abusive for the nominees to compare independent candidates to opposition leaders while he affirmed his support to President Uhuru Kenyatta’s re-election bid.

“The decision by the Political Parties Tribunal to nullify the results of the Murang’a gubernatorial race cuts across. The primaries were not a reflection of the will of the voters not only in the gubernatorial race but also in the other elective seats.”

The Senator had filed an appeal with the party’s tribunal but opted to defect from the party to secure the chance to vie as an independent candidate in time.
