Jubilee pulls out of Matungu, Kabuchai and Machakos by-elections

Jubilee has pulled out of the Matungu and Kabuchai parliamentary by-elections as well as the Machakos senatorial race.

Secretary General Raphael Tuju said the decision follows a meeting with leaders from the party.

“The Party decision is not to participate in by-elections that are occasioned by the unfortunate deaths in Parliament of Senator for Machakos, Parliamentary seat of Matungu and that of Kabuchai,” he said on Wednesday.

The Matungu and Kabuchai  by-elections are slated for March 4 while the Machakos mini-poll will be held on March 18.

According to Tuju, Jubilee is enjoying a period of constructive engagement with the Wiper, ODM and ANC and other parties especially in the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI).

The SG said given the bigger picture of bringing the country together and the BBI avenue, ceding ground to the NASA parties is essential to ensuring that there are no unnecessary arenas for conflict.

“As for Nairobi seat of Governor, we are on stand-by mode as the matter plays out in the High Court and at the Nairobi Assembly,” he added.

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko moved to court seeking to stop the February 18 by-election.

He had obtained an injunction stopping the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) from conducting the by-election.

Sonko later threw a spanner in the works after withdrawing his nomination of Anne Mwenda as a nominee for the Nairobi Deputy Governor position.

“I withdrew the nomination and the case in court because Nairobi is bigger than any individual,” he said.

He is also expected to withdraw a court case challenging the legality of his ouster by the Senate on grounds of wanton graft and abuse of office.

On Wednesday, the Wiper Party nominated Agnes Kavindu to fly the Party’s flag in the Machakos Senatorial by-election.

Kavindu is the estranged wife to former Senator Johnson Muthama.

Tuju then unveiled MCA contestants from Hell’s Gate Ward (Virginia Wamaitha Gicanga); London Ward (Francis Njoroge Njogu) and Huruma Ward (Lucy Ng’endo Njoroge and handed over their certificates.

He also announced that Adan Keynan, Jubilee’s Secretary for the Parliamentary Group, will have an office at the party headquarters.
