Jubilee supporters hold anti-Supreme Court demos

Jubilee supporters have stage anti-Supreme Court demonstrations in Nairobi, Nyeri, Nakuru and Eldoret ahead of Wednesday’s release of the full judgement nullifying President Uhuru Kenyatta’s win.

A section of the protesters demanded for President Kenyatta to be sworn in as the president while others called for recounting of the presidential poll votes, accusing the Supreme Court of ‘stealing’ Jubilee’s win in the historic judgement delivered on September 1.

“The Supreme Court erred by nullifying Uhuru’s win, we want him declared president because he won the election,” one of the protesters said.

In Nairobi, the protesters started their peaceful protest at Uhuru Park before marching along City streets to the Supreme Court carrying placards and condemning the court for nullifying Uhuru’s re-election.

The protest disrupted traffic on Kenyatta Avenue and City Hall Way.

Similar protests have been held in Kiambu, Nyeri, Nakuru and Eldoret, where transport has been paralyzed as the supporters march on the towns’ streets.

DCJ Mwilu and Lenaola Ouster Petition

Coming just a day after two petitions were filed at the Judicial Service Commission seeking the investigation and removal from office of two Supreme Court judges, Deputy Chief Justice (DCJ) Philomena Mwilu and Justice Isaac Lenaola, over alleged gross misconduct.

The man who filed the petition, Derrick Malika Ngumu, who is the executive director of the Angaza Empowerment Network has also filed another petition urging the Chief Justice David Maraga convenes a Supreme Court bench to immediately vacate the ruling nullifying President Kenyatta’s win citing ‘evidence’ in his petition.

The petitioner alleges that DCJ Mwilu was in contact with Busia Senator Amos Wako, a counsel on record for Raila Odinga, and James Orengo, the lead counsel for the opposition NASA through his sister Margaret Orengo.

The two Supreme Court judges are among four who annulled President Kenyatta’s win in the August 8 General Elections citing irregularities and technicalities.

Wambugu Petition

The demonstrations also come a week after President Kenyatta during a meeting with Jubilee Party elected leaders at Sagana State Lodge prevailed upon Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu to drop a petition filed at the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) seeking to oust Chief Justice David Maraga.

“I understand your pain and action. But we have an election to win on October 17. That has to be our focus. Leave the court alone,” President Kenyatta said.

Ngunjiri was accusing Justice Maraga of “gross misconduct”, claiming that the CJ had ‘been used ‘by some NGOs to deliver the ruling that nullified the August 8 election.
