Jubilee to spend Ksh 300 million on party launch

Newly-formed Jubilee Party will spend Ksh 300 million on the national delegates conference that will also double up as the party launch.

The event, slated for September 8 to 10, 2016, will bring together 10,000 delegates from at least 10 parties that will be seeking to dissolve and form one party – Jubilee Party.

According to Jubilee Steering Committee co-chair, Kiraitu Murungi, the huge chunk of the budget will go towards the facilitation of the delegates’ accommodation and transport as well as paying for media coverage.

Already, members of Jubilee affiliate parties are tussling for slots in the conference. President Uhuru Kenyatta’s The National Alliance (TNA) party, DP William Ruto’s United Republican Party (URP) and the Alliance Party of Kenya (APK) are set to get higher delegate positions with the other parties getting 500 slots each.

Another point of contention has been the allocation of party position, with each of the parties demanding to be included.

The Meru Senator, however, says that the responsibility of selecting the process to be used in picking party officials will be left to President Kenyatta, who is the party leader, and his deputy William Ruto.

New Ford Kenya has already threatened to quit Jubilee if it is ignored in the allocations.

Other than TNA, URP, New Ford Kenya and APK, other parties that have expressed willingness to dissolve include Tip Tip, Republican Party, Jubilee Alliance Party, GNU, UPK and UDF.

On Sunday, ODM MPs, led by Homa Bay Women Representative Gladys Wanga criticised Jubilee’s plan to hold the delegates conference saying it is a PR exercise aimed at shielding their apparent flops in service delivery.

“We all know that Jubilee does not have real delegates because it has never held nominations. The people who will be attending the conference in Kasarani are fake delegates ferried from villages,” she said.
