Jubilee was elected legally, support it Obama tells opposition

U.S. President Barack Obama has told the opposition to work with the government saying that the Jubilee Government was legally elected.

Obama, who met the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) principals Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetangula after his address to the nation at Kasarani on Sunday, told the opposition that the current administration is in office legally and they need to support it.

Mr Obama challenged the opposition to be more proactive in ensuring democracy in the country works.

He revealed that a section of the opposition leaders have been pushing him and the American government to pressure the Jubilee Administration on certain issues, something he said the American government cannot do.

President Obama said that the U.S. cannot dictate the agenda of any government.

During his Kasarani address, Obama called on Kenya to expand its democratic space to accommodate diverse views that are an important ingredient in its development.

The leader of the world’s most powerful nation said that democracy does not start or end at elections but ensures governments are constantly checked and citizens given space to exercise their democratic rights.

The U.S. President was in the country for a three-day visit where he co-hosted the Global Entrepreneurship Summit with President Uhuru Kenyatta and held a series of meetings with the government, the opposition and the civil society.
