Judges association opposes Kadhi vetting

Kenya Magistrates and Judges Association has strongly opposed plans by the Judges and Magistrates Vetting Board to vet Kadhis.

Association Secretary General Brian Khaemba and treasurer, David Kuto have raised issue with an advert appearing in newspapers asking members of the public to supply the board with information to be used against Kadhis listed for vetting.

The judiciary association has also argued that the Constitution limits the vetting process to judges and magistrates and not Kadhis as they are appointed by Muslim organisations based on Islamic laws to handle only marital disputes and inheritance issues.

The Magistrates and Judges Association has now given the vetting board a seven-day ultimatum to withdraw the said advert, saying it violates the Constitution.
