CJ post open for application, maximum salary pegged at Ksh.1.3M

The Judiciary has announced a vacancy at the office of the Chief Justice (CJ), inviting qualified Kenyans to send in their applications.

The vacancy was declared by the Acting Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu in a gazette notice on Tuesday.

Kenyans who have at least 15 years experience as superior court judges or as distinguished academics, judicial officers, legal practitioners or such experience in a relevant legal field are invited to try their luck.

And for the tasks of heading the Judiciary, being the president of the Supreme Court, Chairing the Judicial Service Commission and acting as the link between the Judiciary and other arms of the government, a successful candidate will earn between 990,000 and 1,327,888.

People of questionable character, shaky integrity and those who do not meet the requirements of Chapter Six of the Kenyan law on leadership and integrity have been discouraged from applying.

Once interviewed the commission will forward the name of the successful candidate to the parliament for vetting before the formal appointment by the Head of State.

The office fell vacant following the retirement of Kenya’s 14th Chief Justice David Maraga.

Maraga’s controversial tenure was marked by the historic nullification of the 2017 presidential election results.

It was the first presidential election to be annulled not only in Kenya but also in the whole of Africa.

In 2020, he again made an unprecedented move advising President Uhuru Kenyatta to dissolve Parliament for failure to implement the gender principle.

Maraga leaves office after having served the Judiciary for 18 years.
