Justice for Liz as Men Accused of Raping Her Get 22 years in Jail

The court found the three guilty of rape and assault charges, bringing to an end a case that has stretched on for two years.

The victim, popularly known as Liz, is said to have been raped by six suspects when she was on her way home from a burial in Busia. She was then dumped and left for dead.

The incident caught the attention of activists across the country who started protests both in Nairobi and Busia to push for a harsher penalty for the suspects after police ordered them to mow a lawn as punishment before setting them free.

In her ruling, Chief Magistrate Margaret Wambani sentenced the three suspects aged 18, 19 and 22, to 15 years for rape and 7 years for assault.

The other three suspects are still at large with police carrying out a manhunt to bring them to book.
