Kabarnet road accident claims three students

Three students have died and several others injured after the school bus belonging to AGC Lokichar Secondary School in Turkana County overturned at Kaptimbor black spot near Kabarnet town

Witnesses said the vehicle veered off the road and rolled several times at the SS corner in Kaptimbor on the Kabarnet-Iten road.

The students were heading back to their school early Friday morning after participating in regional games that were held at Kabarnet High School.

Baringo County Police Commandant Peter Ndung’u confirming the incident said the accident occurred at about 7am after the bus veered off the road and rolled several times down the stiff hill.

“The students were from Turkana County Schools who were participating in North Rift games and they had excused themselves to travel back to their schools this morning,” said Ndung’u.

“The bus knocked the guard rails in the sharp corner where Four GSU officers had died last year,” said the police commandant, adding that the place has been marked as a black spot.

The police are yet to confirm the total number of students who were in the bus.

Ndung’u urged drivers using the road, especially those who are new to the road, to be cautious and to stop speeding.

“Meanwhile, we are talking with KeNHA to see the way forward and also to erect more road signs and bumps in the road to avoide more accidents.”

Local residents told Citizen Digital that they have been pushing for bumps to be erected on the road near the black spot in vain.

The bodies have been taken to Kabarnet District Hospital mortuary while the injured have been rushed to the same hospital for treatment.
