Kabogo pleads not guilty to ethnic contempt charges

Kiambu Governor William Kabogo has today, Friday pleaded not guilty to ethnic contempt charges before a Nairobi Court over remarks against Coalitions for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) leader Raila Odinga in 2015.

The prosecution alleges on November 25, 2015, Kabogo made a statement meant to incite feelings of hatred against communities that do not embrace male circumcision at Thika Stadium.

An application to have him released on a free bond was opposed by Prosecution, saying such a move would not be in the interest of justice.

The defense had argued that Kabogo obeyed the court summons, and therefore he should be released on free bail, adding that he is ready to abide by any conditions given by the court.

Kabogo, who was appearing before Magistrate Martha Mutuku, was released on a cash bail of Ksh200, 000 or bond of Ksh500, 000.

This comes after summons to appear in court to take the plea were issued two weeks ago by Nairobi Chief Magistrate Daniel Ogembo.
