Kabogo to face off with Waititu as an independent candidate

Kiambu Governor William Kabogo will defend his seat as an independent candidate in the coming August 8 General Elections, after losing the Jubilee primaries to Kabete MP Ferdinand Waititu.

There have been speculations as to whether the flamboyant governor would sit out the race, especially after he hinted at foul play in Waititu’s April 26 win – speculations that he has now confirmed with his announcement this Sunday.

Ferdinand Waititu won the Jubilee Party ticket for the Kiambu gubernatorial race after garnering 353,604 votes against his only rival, Kabogo’s 69,916 votes.

The governor conceded defeat in the primaries on even before final results were announced, though he was quick to point out election irregularities in the whole process.

In a later address, Kabogo hinted electoral irregularities, saying: “…powerful forces do not want me to be the Governor of Kiambu come August 8”.

Kabogo’s latest move will surely be a game changer as far as Kiambu top-most job is concerned, as he can change his misfortunes in the primaries around. Some political pundits attributed the governor’s loss to his perceived arrogant nature rather than track record.

The two leaders have been in constant battles after the governor in March 2016 took to courts to challenge Waititu’s academic papers, arguing that his competitor did not have a valid degree from a recognised university as required in Section 73 of the Constitution on the Integrity and Leadership Act.

The plot by Kabogo to lock Waititu out of the gubernatorial race hit a deadlock when Justice Joseph Onguto dismissed the case in December 2017 on account of lack of evidence.
