Kabura appears before PAC over Ksh1.8bn NYS scam

Josephine Kabura, the key suspect in the National Youth Service scam, on Tuesday appeared before the National Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee.

Kabura appeared before the team to shed light on transactions involving the companies associated with her.

Speaking at the hearing, Kabura said she got tenders to supply goods and services to National Youth Service through former Devolution Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru.

She said she is the sole proprietor of 20 companies that were awarded contracts by NYS, including the supply of road construction material.

The businesswoman said she learnt of the tenders through theDevolution Ministry’s procurement department, saying her businesses were not subjected to prequalification as is procedure.

She is said to have fraudulently received over Ksh1.8 billion from NYS through her companies.

Last week, the committee directed Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet to arrest Kabura after she failed to honor three summons to appear before the committee over the saga.

Kabura’s lawyer, Samuel Omimo, apologised to PAC, chaired by Nicholas Gumbo, for his client’s failure to appear before the committee thrice saying it was his fault as he had engagements in a Malindi Court
