Kaimenyi appears before Lands Committee over SGR land compensation

Lands Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi appeared before the National Assembly Lands Committee over cases of delayed compensation to some people displaced by the ongoing Standard Gauge Railway project.

The committee, chaired by Alex Muiru, was seeking answers from Kaimenyi over the delayed compensation, especially since those affected have already vacated their land.

Hundreds of people affected by the ongoing SGR project have reportedly not received a penny, almost two years after the first phase of compensation exercise commenced.

The first phase of the project from Mombasa to Nairobi has cost the Government Sh12 billion in land compensation, with the second phase to Kisumu via Naivasha set to cost a further Sh18 billion.

According to National Land Commission (NLC) chair Mohamed Swazuri, the project will require over 4, 600 hectares to enable the construction of the new 609km Mombasa-Nairobi railway.

The railway set to cost Sh450 billion is expected to be complete by 2017.

Meanwhile, Kaimenyi has said that the government will revoke all title deeds belonging to anyone who owns public land.

The CS further stated that all public schools would be given legal title deeds to ward off interest of land grabbers.
