Kaimenyi Issues Directive to Varsity Stakeholders

The directive which was in a circular dated 23rd October 2014 was signed by the Cabinet Secretary for Education Professor Jacob Kaimenyi to the secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the Commission of University Education.

The circular was further copied to the chair for university education principal secretaries in the ministry of education, science and technology, the chairs of public universities committees and public universities chancellors committee.

In the circular, Professor Kaimenyi noted that although the Universities Act section 38(4) states a person appointed as Chancellor shall be of high moral character and integrity, the constitution does not provide any minimum qualifications or any other requirements for one to be appointed to such a position in a university.

Kaimenyi has therefore asked the commission for university education to constitute a consultative committee comprising of key stake-holders from public and private universities.

The committee he says will to help develop criteria to be used during the appointment of Chancellors.
