Kakamega Primary School closed for probe into bizarre stampede that killed 14

Learning at the Kakamega Primary School has been suspended to allow investigations into the death of 14 pupils following a stampede on Monday.

Education CS George Magoha, who inspected the scene on Tuesday morning, said the school will remain closed for the next one week.

“We have decided that the children should rest for the rest of the week,” said the CS.

40 other pupils were injured in the incident that left parents and teachers wailing in grief and shock.

Some children are alleged to have jumped off the third floor during the bizarre stampede that is said to have occurred due to panic.

The reason behind the panic has not yet been established.

A report from the BBC said the children were rushing home when the staircase collapsed.

Kakamega Police boss David Kabena said investigations have been launched to establish what led to the stampede.

Leaders sent condolence messages to the families affected with President Uhuru Kenyatta ordering a speedy probe.

Former PM Raila Odinga echoed the Presidents sentiments saying: “There must be an immediate and thorough probe to get to the bottom of this incident.”
