Kakamega’s Gold Rush

It is a back-breaking and dangerous job that requires workers to lift and sift through tonnes of soil and mud for a product that only weighs a few grams. But despite owning some of the most fertile lands in Kakamega County, the gold miners of Khwisero prefer risking lives in mining shafts than the relative security of farming. Pheona Kengah visited the gold mines for answers to this apparent paradox.
