Kalonzo gives govt ultimatum to end banditry in Baringo

CORD co-principal Kalonzo Musyoka has given the government a one-month ultimatum to end banditry in Baringo County.

Speaking in Rift Valley during the Marakwet Cultural Day on Saturday, Kalonzo accused the government of reluctance in solving the insecurity, despite knowing the masterminds of the attack.

He said if the government fails to solve the issue in one month, he would work with community leaders to broker peace in the area.

The Wiper Democratic Movement leader further called for the resignation of Tiaty MP Asman Kamama as Chairman of Parliamentary Select Committee on Security saying he has vested interest in Baringo since he comes from the area.

He also said that the position of regional commissioner was unconstitutional and that Rift Valley Regional Commissioner Osman Warfa should also step aside as he has been implicated in the attacks as being partisan.

On his part, renowned activist Amos ole Mpaka said that they were going to petition the government for both Warfa and Kamama to step aside since they were the stumbling blocks to peace in the region.

Baringo has witnessed several attacks, with the latest being last month’s attack that left 46 people dead in Nadome area near Baringo County.

Two weeks ago, heavily armed bandits attacked school children in Tiaty Constituency who were travelling by bus from a drama festival. No one was reported injured in the attack.

So far, close to 25,000 people have reportedly been displaced in South and North Baringo following a series of attacks in the region.
