Kalonzo supports proposals to amend Constitution

Wiper Democratic Movement leader Kalonzo Musyoka has announced he supports proposals to amend the Constitution.

Raila Odinga’s ODM party has backed calls for a referendum to reintroduce the position of executive Prime Minister and the opposition head has proposed radical constitutional changes to create a three-tier system of government.

Saying the proposed changes will ensure equity and regional balance in the governance of the country, Kalonzo also cautioned against using the amendments to create positions for individual leaders.

“We need to have a serious re-look at the Constitution. The amendment of the Constitution is the all-important thing now, this should be a moment to advance the unity, peace and development of the country,” Kalonzo said.

Addressing the party’s National Executive Council/Parliamentary Group during a retreat at the Elementaita Country Lodge on Friday, Kalonzo said a constitutional moment has presented itself for Kenya to embrace diversity and ethnic balance.

The former Vice President proposes that the amendments be based on the Bomas Draft, where every community will be represented in case of reconstitution of government.

Kalonzo also said that Wiper will be re-branded and strengthened at the grassroots and constituency levels.

He proposed that, as proof that the Uhuru-Raila “handshake” is working, all those facing political cases in courts should be forgiven and their cases withdrawn from courts.

“As a show of goodwill, all those pending criminal prosecutions against politicians, and particularly concerning the Pangani Six, should be dropped and a nolle prosequi entered,” he said.

The Wiper Movement is on a two-day retreat in Naivasha to reflect on the just concluded elections, the Wiper rebranding and the way forward for the Movement.
