Kalonzo to be a one-term President if elected – Senator Omar

Wiper Secretary General Hassan Omar has stated that party leader Kalonzo Musyoka would be a one-term President if he won the 2017 General Election.

Speaking on Citizen TV’s Cheche programme on Wednesday, Omar noted that the idea within CORD is to have each co-principal get a chance to lead the country in the spirit of fairness and equality.

The Mombasa Senator further noted that Wiper will keep on with its push for Kalonzo to be the CORD flag-bearer in the next election adding that they will support anyone who is picked to lead the coalition.

Omar called on all CORD parties to focus on strengthening the coalition ahead of the next election saying a united coalition has a better chance of defeating President Uhuru Kenyatta in the 2017 elections.

“We all know that the only chance that CORD has of winning the election is by staying united and it is for that reason that we should pick a line-up by December or latest January next year,” he noted.

He mentioned that instances like the botched ODM nominations last year which forced him to quit ODM for Wiper are detrimental to the stability of the coalition.

He clarified speculations of defection that erupted after Wiper chair David Musila led a delegation from Kitui County to State House saying the matter at hand needed intervention at the national level.

“There is a road in Kitui that is in a very bad state and has led to protests led by Senator David Musila. This is the issue that took them to State House as they sought the President’s intervention.”

“Musila demonstrated and they were even teargased. This seems to have caused the attention of Roads Cabinet Secretary who raised the issue with the President.”

Omar drummed up support for Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka as the favourable candidate for CORD saying his candidature will usher in fresh leadership in the country.

“People are looking for a middle-of-the-road kind of candidate and I have a feeling Kalonzo is just that.”

“Kalonzo is least linked to corruption even when he served in government and this would make him fit for the position.”

Omar said that the coalition will allow wide consultation and public participation as a way of improving credibility in the nomination process for a presidential candidate.

The issue of picking a CORD flag-bearer has sparked a heated debate with Kalonzo, Ford Kenya leader Moses Wetangula and ODM leader Raila Odinga gunning for the seat.
