Kandara MP speaks out after assault saga

Kandara MP Alice Wahome has defended her move to confront Kandara Constituency IEBC returning officer on Friday in Murang’a, saying the electoral official had posted inaccurate data on President Uhuru Kenyatta’s votes.

In a statement to the media on Saturday at the Bomas of Kenya, the Jubilee legislator refuted claims that the tussle was as a result of her wanting to alter figures of election declaration forms and instead claimed that the Kandara Constituency returning officer Martin Malonza had asked Jubilee Party agents to sign the results form despite anomalies at Kiiri polling station in Kandara.

“The returning officer is aware that we had no reason to change any results as majority of votes belonged to Uhuru Kenyatta,” said Wahome

Wahome who is also Jubilee Party’s chief agent in Kandara further indicated that all she wanted was to verify the results and request that the tally be recorded as disputed in accordance with the law.

“This request was rejected and dismissed by the returning officer and he started shouting loudly and being dramatic about a simple request. The whole incident would have been avoided had the RO appreciated his role vis a vis that of an agent wanting verification of results,” said Wahome.

The lawmaker also said that minor altercations are normal during elections, saying that she had no reason to fight with the returning officer.

“I had given the returning officer space all through the entire exercise and had no reason now or before to fight with him. I stand with the truth,” Wahome said.

Wahome also dismissed reports that the Director of Public Prosecutions had directed she be investigated and prosecuted, saying she had received no communication.

“Nobody has called me to tell me that there is any likelihood that I will be prosecuted,” Wahome added.

The Kandara MP was also adamant that the incident that was captured on camera had been calculated and choreographed with ill intent and blamed the media and opposition for spreading the video and not “verifying the truth which is the cardinal rule of journalism.”

This comes hours after the DPP ordered the Inspector General of Police and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to begin looking into the incident surounding the viral clip.
