Kanu offices razed down in midnight fire

The Kenya African National Union (KANU) Meru office was razed down following an early morning fire, but no injuries have been reported.

According to sources, the fire started around midnight.

Efforts by fire fighters from the Meru Fire Station bore no fruit, as no property was salvaged.

The building, which was built over 50 years and doubles up as Mau Mau war veteran offices, had no security personnel on site at the time of the fire.

Members of the independence party, who were at the scene, said that receipts and documents containing vital information about their association have been lost in the fire.

Some also alleged that the fire might have been an attempt to conceal information from the British government about Mau Mau compensation.

On his part, Imenti North legislator Rahim Dawood alleged that it might be an arson incident which may be linked to land grabbers – individuals who he says would have wanted to obtain the land illegally.
