Kapenguria: Two Class 8 pupils, worker die in a school well

A routine general cleaning exercise on Friday at the Chewoyet Primary School turned tragic after two students fell into a well.

According to reports, two Class 8 pupils were fetching water from the school well when the rope broke, dumping a jerry can into the depths.

“Wakati aliingia ndani akakawia hakutoka, huyo wa pili akaambia wanafunzi wengine mnizungushe niingie ndani niangalie huyo mwengine akaingia,” Bill Abet, told Citizen TV on Saturday.

Pupils knew all was not well when the two took too long in the well, they called for help from a mason who was undertaking repairs in the school.

He would suffer the same fate.

“Sasa fundi akasema wacha niingie niokoe hawa. Kuzungusha kamba ikikati akabaki ndani,”George Logwe, a witness said.

The parents of the pupils are yet to come to terms with the sudden demise of children they had high hopes in.

“Sasa waokoaji wangekua tungeokoa hao hawangekufa,” Martha Mutiso, the parent to one of the pupils said.

A villager played the hero in retrieving the bodies from the well after efforts by the police and West Pokot county fire department hit a snag.

Area residents have blamed the incident on the lack of piped water in the area

The bodies of the victims of the triple tragedy were taken to the Kapenguria Referral Hospital Mortuary.
