Karen land, NYS, Hustlers jet sagas top graft list pollster

The Karen land saga, National Youth Service (NYS) graft claims and the controversial police recruitment exercise are among the corruption allegations that have tainted the image of Jubilee government, according to a poll released on Wednesday.

The Karen land scandal is the most recognised among respondents with 46 per cent being aware of the allegations while NYS graft claims and the aborted police recruitment stand at 38 and 26 per cent respectively.

The ‘hustler’s jet’ saga, which links Deputy President William Ruto, also features in the list with 8 per cent of Kenyans being aware of the allegations while 5 per cent of those interviewed admitted to being aware of corruption allegations related to the Standard Gauge Railway.

Cases from past regimes including land case st the Coast (20 per cent) and the ‘chicken-gate’ scandal (12 per cent), involving officials of the defunct Interim Independent Electoral Commission (IIEC) and National Examinations Council (KNEC), also surfaced in the poll with 52 per cent of Kenyans accusing Jubilee of frustrating investigations into the cases.

In general, CORD supporters exhibited clear awareness of corruption in the government standing at 65 per cent against 49 per cent of Jubilee supporters who admitted to the same.

The poll, carried out by research firm IPSOS Synovate, was carried out between 30th July and 9th August 2015 with 2,002 respondents in 41 counties being interviewed.

The margin-of-error attributed to sampling and other random effects is + or – 2.2 with a 95% confidence level.
