Kavonokia, Akorino sect members in jail for resisting polio vaccine

Three Kavonokia and Akorino sect members were on Monday arrested after they blocked public health officials from administering the polio vaccine on their children.

Police officers from Kajiado who accompanied the health officials were going door to door educating parents on the need of having their children vaccinated but the three refused citing religious beliefs that’s against modern medicine.

The three; John Njoroge, David Kiarie and Leah Njeri were detained at Kajiado police station and are expected to be arraigned in court to face charges of subjecting children to dangerous cultural practices.

Local leaders have urged all the chiefs in the county to ensure that children are immunized and the community sensitised on the need of the vaccination.

The Kavonokia and Akorino sects are notoriously against medicine and in 2014, police officers and health officials had to storm homes of the members and forcefully administering polio vaccine on their children.
