KCSE candidate commits suicide after parents quarrel her for failing

A student in Migori County took her own life after performing below her parents’ expectations in the 2017 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination.

Carren Ouma, 22, who sat her exams at Moi Nyabohanse Girls High School plunged herself into a borehole after scoring a C minus.

Migori County Police Boss Joseph Nthenge said preliminary investigations established that Carren’s parents had picked a quarrel with her about her performance.

Mr. Nthenge said the parents blamed her for not performing “well” in the examination despite sitting for the KCSE examination for the second time; a quarrel he said might have pushed the candidate to commit suicide.

The county police boss urged parents of candidates who has just received their KCSE results to avoid putting their children under unnecessary pressure due to their performance.

He called on parents to reason with their children asserting that performing below their expectation does not insinuate that the candidate has failed in life.

In 2016, Carren scored a C minus at Osingo Secondary where she sat the KCSE exam for the first time before making a second attempt to meet the university cut-off point of C plus.
