KCSE candidate dies while sitting exam in hospital

A 22-year-old KCSE candidate in Bungoma County died on Tuesday morning of what is suspected to be blood poisoning or unsafe abortion.

Kelan Wanyonyi from Mabuusi Secondary School in Kanduyi Sub-County is said to have fell sick on November 13 and admitted to Bungoma County Referral Hospital.

According to Bungoma Medical Superintendent Magrima Mayama, they suspected the girl was suffering from both Malaria and blood poisoning (Septicemia), but she later tested negative for the former.

The candidate sat for her Mathematics paper II and Biology paper I exams while in the hospital ward on Monday.

“On 13th she was able to sit her KCSE exam in the ward. But today morning she did the first question only and unfortunately her condition worsened and she succumbed to septicemia,” said Mayama.

Her father Justus Wanyonyi, however suspected that his child might have tried to procure an abortion, and the herbs she was allegedly administered with by an unknown person did not go well with her system.

“They told us our child was bleeding. We suspect foul play that somebody had given her herb to help her. She didn’t even say she was suffering, she was just silent,” said Mr. Wanyonyi.
