KDF rescues 13 Kenyans from Somalia

The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) has rescued 13 Kenyans who were being held in Somalia by suspected Al Shabaab militants.

The 13 youth were reportedly abducted during a fishing expedition in Malindi before being transferred to the neighbouring country.

Kilifi County Commissioner Magu Mutindika on Tuesday said the youth hail from Kilifi and Lamu Counties.

“Eleven of them are from Kilifi and two come from Lamu. What we have established is that they had been obliviously recruited into Al Shabaab. They were promised money and jobs but when they reached Ras Kamboni that is when they realised they were joining the outlawed group,” said the county commissioner.

According to Mr. Mutindika, the youth had been recruited into the militant group where they are said to have been tortured and subjected to different extremist activities.

The Kilifi County Commissioner said the youth were abducted by three suspects, two of whom are known to the police and are being hunted down.

The youth are now being held by police in Malindi where they were handed over by the military as investigations continue.
